The season has been a disaster down here this year...small fish,small percentage roe, and sad market....
We are on a quota system down here...
I've actually been on a seine boat years ago when we got a 300+ ton set...unbelievable experience.....
stocks collapsing has nothing to do with this...
In most places these guy's fish, the biomass of herring is actually healthy.
One huge thing we need on our collective coast is a seal kull...that would do wonders.
I don't think these herring have anything to do with California's Salmon. This is a heavily regulated fishery and I think there are still plenty of the little bastards around.....I am not an expert on the herring but it is an awsome photo.
Other than JT I don't know anyone that makes money that fast.
I used to do stock assesment and dive charters on herring for years...
Although I have a small bit of knowledge behind me I can say that Frosty is bang on.
most of the herring biomass is still quite strong and of all fisheries...well managed for the most part.
I also agree with the JT statement... Nobody upgrades boats more other than BC Ferries
