Thanks Gato for the awesome info. Harry and Sarkis do take things to heart to fix and maintain the integrity of the reels. I have no problem with that. The debate goes on and on. What I do have a problem with is that 4 80's that I know of have "penn senator glazed drag stickiness" issues brand spanking new. What they didn't test was initial break of drag... especially for the new 80's. Once the drag was released it released smooth until I stopped or the fish stopped. Then the rod would buckle over and keep on going until it released and then the rod tip rose slightly but kept constant pressure while either I or the fish was pulling. As soon as I or the fish stopped it would take a super hard pull to get the drag going again.

I let Sarkis know about it when I talked to him but he said it probably was a problem with my particular reel which they sent me new washers. But I bought another 80 with the same problem.... and so has a friend. These products need to be individually tested to make sure it doesn't happen to everyone. I work on reels religiously and to me it ain't a matter of "greased or not greased" but "if it works or doesn't work properly". Therefore I have to fix what needs to be fixed.

My boat runs Avets. We went Ono...Wahoo... fishing the last two days with the Avets. I got so fed up with the jerky 80 yanking hooks out of fish that I turned to the dark side.... and no it wasn't due to super tight drags. My dry drag 50 worked like a charm and so did the other greased 50. Both caught fish. Unfortunately the 80's were used for this duty on one of the days. Now.... if I were to use the 80 right of the box and hooked a marlin..... I can guarantee it would have led to a hook pull or line break.

Again this is not a debate guys!!!! It doesn't matter if its greased or not greased. It is basically a problem solving issue. If I didn't grease it, it would be the most irritating reel to fish with. If it worked properly to begin with then I wouldn't have greased it. If I order another one and it does the same exact thing... guess what? I'm gonna find a way to get it smooth.

So again to everyone, this is in no way a put down to the Avet 80's. I will own more once funds are available. Everything about this reel is close to perfect for me... except for the issue I have with the drag. Therefore I hope Sarkis tests out each of them to make sure it doesn't do this. The 50's were fine.. why not the 80's drags. Don't grease them if they are smooth.... but if they are like mine... grease made me and my father happy fisherman the last 2 days.
