I use carb cleaner, brake cleaner, lighter fluid, and Naptha from Home Depot to remove grease. Make sure whatever solvent you use is dried from the bearing before re-oiling. Don't spin them when they're dry, and oil them with ReelX, Black Market Oil, CorrosionX etc. What I use depends on how often I plan to break it down for a clean and inspect. Oils with different viscosities offer different lengths of protection to your bearings. Grease is obviously the longest lasting lube and protection. CorrosionX thickens with standing and lasts a long time. ReelX is thinner and requires more frequent application. Black Market Oil is right there with ReelX for viscosity. Extreme Lube Plus is the thinnest solvent/oil that I know of and makes some of my reels freespool up to three minutes. No one needs that kind of freespool so I mix a drop of Extreme and Black Market or ReelX to get the right freespool vs longevity. Good luck with this.
