A couple of years ago I was fishing for seabass (similar to a snook) in Japan. The were not biting, so my prostaff asked if I wanted to catch some mullet.
On what?
On small black ripbaits. Specifically a Lucky Craft Humpback minnow. He said any small (5 to 7 cm) minnow will work.
I call BS,
and he preceded to catch 4 four to seven pound mullet on the 4lb. spinning gear.
I got an idea. I had seven weight FR with a sinking tip line in my truck. I also had a collection of black wooly buggers that I used for Amago (a Japanese trout)
It was great fun. A slow twitch and strip was the ticket. All the fish were mouth hooked, and some jumped! A size six seemed to be the ticket.
Anywhoo--mebbee the small black flies will work in Cali too.
