Yes, longer seems to be better for the rail. I'm in the process of lengthening the butts on my 40, 50, 60 and 80 lb rods that I built several years ago so I can use them more effectively on the rail. I built them all with 8" hypalon butt grips and gimbals. I'm adding about 3-4" and finishing them off with rubber butt caps, no gimbal so I have a little more to tuck under my arm. So a little more in the butt is better for me anyway and then that extra length on the rail really helps keep the line off the hull at circle time.
