Nope, not necessary but really adds a lot of capacity. Inshore, it also does a pretty good job of cutting through kelp. As to cost, by your third line fill, the spectra has paid for itself. It’s also lighter on the spool so should add a little distance to your cast.
Tangles suck and picking out a backlash can be very difficult.
