As far as gear ratios remember that the higher the ration the less leverage you have, combine that with a long rod and you can build a combo that will kick your ass on the long rod. If you can find the Highspeed jig master with a 5-1 with a tiboron or accurate frame you will compete with all the shiney reels, and save a little loot. it must be noted that I am a deckhand and my jig rod lives on the boat and only gets salt water for lube and maitinence, so the expencive shiney reels just dont take the abuse like the old penns. IMO
