I've always liked the San Joaquin River for tent camping. It's out of the way, up and over on the other side. Campgrounds like Upper Soda Springs, Pumice Flat are nice. At the end of the road is Red's Meadow where they have horses available for pack trips and day rides. Take the hike to Devil's Postpile and Rainbow Falls. A couple of lakes along the way. One's a small pond on the road in called Starkweather, and on down the road is Sotcher a little bigger. Check it out.
