You'd like the current going into the kelp or structure so that the chum you toss out gets pushed into the area holding the fish to pull them out and draw them closer to your boat. You can usualy tell if there's current or not by checking out the kelps. Looks to see which way the kelp is leaning over and for current breaks around the kelp. This will show you the direction of the current and also how fast its moving. Straight up and down kelp with no breaks means no current. You can hail the squid boats on chnl 11 and I wouldn't mix the fin bait with the squid. If your worried about not getting any live stuff at the island stop by a asain market before you split and buy about 15 to 20lbs of fresh dead. They usualy sell it for .99 to 1.49 a pound. Wish I had info on some hot spots but thats hard info to get. Good luck.
