Re: el Toro and One Track's excellent bowhunting adventure

Johnny,
Coming from the base of the scull and going up the beam of a mule deer's antler, the first point right above the eyes is called an eyeguard. Some mule deer have them on their rack and some do not. It is a desireable trait because it adds total points to the score.

Glassing the process of spotting deer from a distance. It usually involves getting to a high vantage point, sitting down where you are not skylined and are hidden, and staring for hours through binoculars and spotting scopes. We used a system of 2 pair of 10 power binoculars, a pair of tripod mounted 15 power binoculars and a tripod mounted 15-45 power spotting scope. With this system you are covered from in close to over a mile away. Glassing is the best way to find deer in open country. You do most of your ground covering with your eyes. It keeps you from spooking deer that would see you coming for miles away. Good quality optics are a must as you spend literally most of the day staring through them. Anything less than the finest will leave you with a headache and you will not spot as many deer.
