Ok - here's a question for ya'll. For my 40# reel (upgrading to the JX from a Big 5 special on a jigmaster. . .) I run spectra - this time it's 65#, I have 50 on the jigmaster - to 40# mono. I have let the professionals do the tying for me. I did it myself a couple of times and it was a bit of a pain in the ass. I need more practice.
Anyway, back to the main point. I use 40# as my topshot. Then I carry 40,30, and 20# fluoro for leaders. I tie them on with a surgeons knot. I have never had any failures and it seems to work well for me. Anyone else do it this way?
The surgeons knot is what you generally use to tie up leaders or put your tippet on for flyfishing and it seems to work pretty well up to about 40# test. I don't have much experience with higher test but I think it might be a bit too bulky for a surgeons.
